Svalbard: Silent Games

For over a century, Norwegians, Russians and Ukranians have been competing in friendly sports competitions.

For almost a century, three nationalities have coexisted mainly on Svalbard Islands: Norwegians, Russians and Ukrainian. Life in the far north has never been easy: before airports, settlements could only be reached by more than a week's journey by ship. Because of this, the need for mutual aid led to an unprecedented cooperation between people of different nationalities. The Norwegian and Russian settlements have competed in friendly sport competitions every year since 1936. Neither the Cold War nor the collapse of the USSR interrupted the exchanges. Today, for the first time in over a century, something has changed. All tournaments have been canceled. Entire families, both Russian and Ukrainian, have fled the Russian settlement, even before the war begun. The beginning of the conflict worsened the already critical situation. The Russian settlement changed leadership and, as a result, the people who disagreed returned home. Meanwhile, the Norwegian government has kept increasing its control over the archipelago through the removal of voting rights for more than 40% of residents. Today, the peaceful coexistence that has marked the island for decades is beginning to falter. Will human relations be able to survive?

TALES from barbagia:
a string quartet in four acts

A String Quartet Inspired by Sardinia's Cultural Memory

Tales from Barbagia is a string quartet in four acts, inspired by the vocal traditions, landscapes, and cultural memory of Barbagia, a remote and rugged region in the heart of Sardinia. Central to the work is cantu a tenore, a deeply expressive style of polyphonic male singing marked by overtone-rich drones, non-lexical syllables, and a solo melodic line (sa boche) carried above the rumbling timbres of contra, mesu boche, and bassu. Rather than reproducing this sonority, the quartet transforms its structural and expressive essence into a new, abstract instrumental language within each movement, each a self-contained “tale” reflecting a different facet of Sardinian Sound and Soul.
The first movement acts as a prologue. It reflects on the dynamic interplay between solo and collective voices within cantu a tenore, distributing leadership fluidly among the instruments. It introduces a central arabesque-like theme, first sung by the cello, which reappears as a guiding thread in the final movement.
The second act explores a surprising rhythmic kinship between cantu a tenore and Argentine tango. The movement is not a tango per se, but evokes its playful, melancholic, and syncopated spirit in dialogue with Sardinian vocal phrasing. The result is a tension between familiarity and estrangement.
S’Anima e Su Ventu (The Soul and the Wind) is the most atmospheric movement. Static and windblown, it evokes the open silence of Barbagia’s highlands. Microtonal gestures and harmonic textures emerge slowly, like memories carried by air. It is music on the edge of disappearance.
The finale, Dilliriu (the Sardinian word for madness) brings back themes from earlier movements in a frenzied, ecstatic transformation. Drawing energy from Su Dillu, a traditional Sardinian dance, the movement celebrates fragmentation, memory, and catharsis.

Enantiodromia

For chamber ensemble

A Musical Dialectic of opposites

Enantiodromia is an abstract work for chamber ensemble and conductor that explores the dialectical progression from opposition to ultimate unity. Rooted in ancient Greek philosophy—the tendency of phenomena, when pushed to their extreme, to transform into their opposites —the piece is a musical reflection on the continuous, co-existing balance of dualities found in nature and the psyche. The entire structure is built upon the journey of two contrasting harmonic aggregates that gradually move toward a single, final unity. This synthesis is achieved through a specific harmonic aggregate derived from Pierre Boulez’s technique of pitch multiplication, blending opposition and resolution across the work’s three movements. In the first movement, Mirrored Particles, the journey begins by introducing the two opposing pitch aggregates. The movement is structured antiphonally, drawing inspiration from Renaissance cori spezzati. This opposition is further staged through the alternation of strictly notated sections and passages employing controlled aleatoricism. The movement concludes with a semi-improvised cadenza for the clarinet and bass clarinet, who step to the front of the stage and face each other in a dialogue that embodies opposition as both conflict and conversation.Morphs, the second movement, is transitional in nature. It initiates the gradual progression toward unity, abandoning the antiphonal structure of the first movement. It explores six submultiples of the final aggregate and their complementary sets, bringing the musical opposites into closer relation. The final movement, Coincidentia Oppositorum, introduces the final harmonic synthesis. The flute and alto flute move to the front of the stage for a duet that mirrors the earlier clarinet cadenza, musically and physically opposing one another while introducing the final synthesized harmonic material. The work culminates in a powerful final burst that finds resolution in the reconciliation of its internal divisions.

Digressions

Winner at 2024 West Cork Chamber Music Festival Young Composers Composition Competition

The mind is a vast and mysterious thing, and sometimes thoughts come and go in ways that are hard to understand and follow.

Digressions is a somewhat confused and slightly disoriented thought process put into music. We initially grasp a concept, an idea, or a specific thought. Still, we progressively lose its meaning and core due to our brain blurring it with other thoughts closely (and more remotely) related to the original idea. The quartet introduces a theme in the first violin, the musical representation of the initial thought. However, this theme progressively gets fragmented and drawn by other musical material closely related to it. It undergoes a series of transformations, each more drastic than the previous one, figuratively moving between various states of mind, eventually losing the original meaning of this initial idea. We eventually return to a second presentation of the idea, which apparently has gained some of its original meaning again, before realizing it was just an illusion, and that we cannot remember its original meaning.

Dispute on a brazilian dance

Premiered at Christchurch Cathedral, Oxford, 16 November 2024

A musical argument set to the material of a traditional Brazilian dance.

In this piece, the composer takes the vibrant, unifying rhythm of a dance —a symbol of celebration and harmony— and repurposes it to create a musical environment defined by competition, tension, and aggression. By using a limited amount of musical material, the piece unfolds with surprising contrasts, where the two violinists engage in a constant, heated rivalry. Each performer seeks to outdo the other, constantly striving to be more virtuosic, more capable, and more commanding than their counterpart.
The result is an ongoing musical "argument," where the competing voices of the two violinists push and pull against each other, creating a dynamic of friction and challenge. The audience should feel the undercurrent of competition throughout the performance—an interaction that is at once combative and playful. To enhance this experience, performers are encouraged to bring expressive physicality and stage presence into their playing, making every gesture and facial expression part of the ongoing musical duel.

SÃo PEDRO DE NORDESTINHO

For Guitar ensemble - A GUITARIAM COMMISSION

Premiered at the Whyte Recital Hall, Dublin, & Curtis Auditorium, Cork, in April 2024

Commissioned by GuitaRIAM, the work is inspired by the scenery of São Pedro de Nordestinho, a village on the north side of São Miguel. I visited the village during a trip to the Azores Islands in 2023. Small, 18th-century white and black houses are surrounded by small fields and lush and fluorishing vegatation. This pictoresque scenery, where time seems to have stopped a long time ago, overlooks the Atlantic Ocean which, with its vast presence, seems to be an endless blue painting, creating an eerie atmosphere where the mind can cast its thoughts adrift. It was premiered in Dublin at the Whyte Recital Hall on April 14, 2024.

// Scroll spy const sections = document.querySelectorAll("section[id]"); const navLinks = document.querySelectorAll(".nav-link"); window.addEventListener("scroll", () => { let current = ""; sections.forEach((section) => { const sectionTop = section.offsetTop; if (pageYOffset >= sectionTop - 80) { current = section.getAttribute("id"); } }); navLinks.forEach((link) => { link.classList.remove("active"); if (link.getAttribute("href") === `#${current}`) { link.classList.add("active"); } }); }); // Load icons lucide.createIcons();

A FAR TOO COMMON INERT DISMAY

For soprano and electronics

Premiered by Elizabeth Hilliard at Trinity College Dublin, April 2024.

A Portrait of Indifference in the 21st Century

Indifference is everywhere. It is a widespread behaviour we all experience at least once in our lifetime. The truth is that indifference to an issue is simply the easiest route – much, much easier than the effort that is required to tackle issues and challenges.
The issue is that indifference is highly, but silently, harmful. While we passively decide to ignore problems and challenges, people on the other side are desperately suffering. The atrocious genocide in Gaza that Israel is pursuing is the clearest example: anger and sufferance trigger an immediate reaction which, however, often becomes ephemeral and fades into a state of passive indifference that is just unacceptable. This piece is the portrait of indifference to severe issues and events that characterize human behaviour in the incredibly fast-paced societal context of the 21st century. It takes words from survivors and testimonies of the conflict in Gaza as the main text. The performer sings these words of despair and pain, but progressively
loses confidence and interest in these words – eventually ending up apathetically reciting what people are currently going through. A bed of electronically processed voices supports the performer, and oscillates between brighter and darker sonorities. The electronic tape’s sound becomes progressively more muffled, before disappearing into silence. Total isolation is indifference’s only residual - and hypocritically, we’d never hope for anyone to end up in complete isolation and lack of support. However, it is precisely what we do daily without passive indifference.

// Scroll spy const sections = document.querySelectorAll("section[id]"); const navLinks = document.querySelectorAll(".nav-link"); window.addEventListener("scroll", () => { let current = ""; sections.forEach((section) => { const sectionTop = section.offsetTop; if (pageYOffset >= sectionTop - 80) { current = section.getAttribute("id"); } }); navLinks.forEach((link) => { link.classList.remove("active"); if (link.getAttribute("href") === `#${current}`) { link.classList.add("active"); } }); }); // Load icons lucide.createIcons();

REFLECTIONS

For percussion ensemble

Reflections is a composition that explores the textures and colors available to a quintet of percussionists. I was particularly interested in the ability to create unconventional and surprising textures and atmospheres instead of more rhythmically-driven writing. The piece endeavors to treat the ensemble as a single, multi-faceted hyper-instrument, merging different sonic layers to create a continuously evolving sound. The intention is to make the listener unaware they are hearing a conventional percussion piece, instead immersing them in a world of pure texture.

// Scroll spy const sections = document.querySelectorAll("section[id]"); const navLinks = document.querySelectorAll(".nav-link"); window.addEventListener("scroll", () => { let current = ""; sections.forEach((section) => { const sectionTop = section.offsetTop; if (pageYOffset >= sectionTop - 80) { current = section.getAttribute("id"); } }); navLinks.forEach((link) => { link.classList.remove("active"); if (link.getAttribute("href") === `#${current}`) { link.classList.add("active"); } }); }); // Load icons lucide.createIcons();

TEN DAYS IN A MAD HOUSE

For EIGHT VOICES and PIANO

This Suite aims to celebrate the figure and immeasurable contribution of Nellie Bly to journalism, society, and women’s rights. The work consists of four short pieces, each drawing inspiration from fragments of Bly's groundbreaking investigative report, Ten Days in a Mad-House (1887). I have placed these excerpts inside the scores and strongly encourage listeners to read the fragments during each piece, as it will add to the overall musical experience and help those with no musical literacy better understand my creative choices. The Suite draws its central theme from the remarkable career of Nellie Bly, the pseudonym of Elizabeth Cochrane (1864–1922). Her career began with a fierce and powerful response to an article in the Pittsburgh Dispatch entitled “What Girls Are Good For.” After sending an angry letter to the editor protesting columnist Erasmus Wilson’s screed against the working woman, Cochrane’s undeniable talent led the managing editor to offer her a job. She began using the pen name Nellie Bly, borrowed from a popular Stephen Foster song.
At a time when a woman’s contribution to a newspaper was generally confined to the “women’s pages,” Bly was given a rare opportunity to report on broader issues. After traveling for several months through Mexico and sending back reports on official corruption and the condition of the poor, she left Pittsburgh in 1887 for New York City, where she started writing for Joseph Pulitzer’s New York World.
One of her first and most impactful undertakings for the World was to feign insanity to get herself committed to the notorious asylum on Blackwell’s (Roosevelt) Island. Her notes on the horrific conditions, the brutal treatment of patients, and life inside the asylum were subsequently published and collected in Ten Days in a Mad-House. This revelatory work caused a grand-jury investigation and helped usher in improvements to patient care. Similar repertorial inquests took her into sweatshops, jails, and the legislature, establishing her as the best-known woman journalist of her day.

ΣΥΝΆΨΕΙΣ

FOR PERIOD ORCHESTRA

Written for and workshopped by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, March 2025

Inspired by an unexpected auditory connection between a motif from Bach’s Cantata BWV 128 and one from Eddy Serafini’s Concerto da Camera per Clavicembalo e Archi (2001), συνάψεις uses these fragments as foundational materials for an exploration of the broader concept of connection . Hence, what began as a spontaneous association evolved into a structured dialogue between past and present, tradition and innovation. Bach’s fragment provides historical depth and contrapuntal rigor, while Serafini’s motif brings a contemporary perspective, blending Baroque formal elements with modern fluidity.
The composition develops through contrapuntal techniques, interweaving these two motifs in a way that mirrors the function of synapses in the brain transmitting neural impulses. Lines intertwine and evolve, creating harmonic and rhythmic interactions that bridge stylistic divides. The result is a synthesis of Baroque and contemporary approaches, bridging compositional styles and historical periods and exploring how tradition can inform and transform modern compositional practice.

RAFFAELE SUITE

FOR SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Commissioned by Trinity Orchestra. Premiered in Dublin, November 2024 & Milan, January 2025.

One of the five chapters presented within the film, Raffaele deals with trauma, infidelity, loss, remorse and jealousy, heavily relying on the music's emotional power to convey its message. This suite further highlights the intense and stark contrasting feeling of Raffaele, the main character, conveying sadness, frustration, a creepy sense of obsession at times and, most importantly, a deep sense of desperation.
This suite takes the two primary cues from Raffaele's chapter, "The Water Salesman" and "Raffaele", respectively, reorchestrated specifically for Trinity Orchestra.

Commissioned by Emmanuel Sowicz. Premiere: Oxford, UK, June 2026.

Inspired by the Bodleian Schools quadrangle, the suite encompasses four pieces for classical guitar inspired by a concept, anecdote or idea linked to one of the four liberal art disciplines that took place in Oxford throughout history. The suite's movements are designed to be programmed either individually or as a complete cycle, a decision taken in accordance with Emmanuel.Erected between 1613 and 1624, the Quadrangle’s architecture honors the seven liberal arts, with the four disciplines of the mathematical quadrivium — Arithmetic, Geometry, Music, and Astronomy — inscribed above its doorways.

In Memoriam is a memorial and solemn tribute to the millions who tragically lost their lives during the COVID-19 pandemic and to all those whose lives were irrevocably altered by its devastating impact.

2025 marks the fifth anniversary of the global outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, a profound event that reverberated through every corner of the world, reshaping lives and leaving an indelible mark on humanity. It honors the memory of healthcare workers, family members, friends, and everyone affected by the dark days of isolation, uncertainty, and loss.
The composition’s quiet, static sonorities and obsessive focus on the piano’s reverberation capabilities encapsulate the haunting stillness of the pandemic’s early days. The piece reflects the lockdowns, isolation, and a pervasive sense of uncertainty that profoundly reshaped daily life. It serves as both a poignant reminder of the collective trauma and a meditation on the resilience of the human spirit during such unprecedented times.
The inspiration for the piece’s sonorous quality lies in Paul Verlaine's poem "Clair de Lune", whose themes of inner reflection, isolation, and searching for solace mirror the experiences of many during the pandemic. Verlaine’s imagery of distractions—playing the lute, dancing beneath fantasy disguises—symbolizes the human need to find comfort amid emotional turmoil. This resonates with the forced isolation of lockdowns, where people sought moments of escape, distraction, and connection, whether through music, art, or fleeting moments of joy.
In the third stanza of the poem, Verlaine finds beauty in the moonlight, which can be interpreted as a symbol of hope—an image of quiet peace amidst turmoil. For this piece, the moonlight embodies the optimism for brighter days ahead, much like the hope that slowly emerged from the darkness of the pandemic.
Additionally, the piece draws a direct connection to Bergamo, Italy, a city that became a Western epicenter of the COVID-19 crisis in early 2020. Through this connection, "In Memoriam" seeks to serve as a universal symbol of remembrance—not just for death and loss, but also for the collective strength, resilience, and compassion that helped carry communities through the darkest moments. It is a tribute to the sacrifices made by so many, whose actions helped guide us out of the tunnel of uncertainty.
Ultimately, "In Memoriam" is a message of hope, respect, and gratitude—a meditation on the human ability to endure, to heal, and to emerge from hardship, with an abiding recognition of the strength and compassion that bind us all.

SEARCHING FOR A LULLABY

FOR SOLO PIANO

Premiered by David Bremner at Trinity College Dublin, April 2024.

Searching for a Lullaby is a solo piano piece that traces the quiet, intimate journey of trying to remember something just out of reach. From the very beginning, the music moves with an almost improvised freedom. It drifts, cycles, and pauses as if the pianist is feeling their way through a half-forgotten memory.
For much of the piece, the lullaby remains hidden, hinted at only in fragments. When it finally appears, it arrives like a moment of sudden clarity: gentle, simple, and deeply tender. But just as quickly, it slips away again. The melody breaks apart, dissolving back into the musical haze from which it emerged.
This fleeting theme mirrors the experience of chasing a thought we can’t quite hold onto, something we remember imperfectly or perhaps aren’t ready to fully face. It comes to us softly, then fades, leaving behind a bittersweet, reflective stillness.
Exploring shifting moods, colors, and registers of the piano, the piece creates a sound world that is always evolving, inviting listeners into a space of quiet searching, fragile beauty, and gentle melancholy.

THE FERDINANDO - MUSEUM of FRONTIERS

PERMANENT SOUND INSTALLATION AT FORT BARD.

The Frontier Museum explores the concept of boundaries not only from a political point of view but also an economic and cultural one.The final part of the new museum asks for a question: “The Alps, do they represent a border?, with the aim of leading the visitor to reflect about their development and on the meaning given to the word frontier: boundary or barrier? Obstacle or beaming? This aspect outlines an exhibition that conveys a complex and structured view not only of Fort of Bard, but also the historical, social, cultural and geopolitical context within which they are placed in different historical periods: a journey into the past that ends with an extremely current reflection on the present.
In this way the visitor is involved in a dialogue with the place where he is located, in search of an identity, the one of the Alps, in constant evolution, which becomes the crossroads of great events of the past and the history of men made of simple and memories actions.
